<text>From Meagan:
A train derailment occurred in Sycamore, GA, this morning around 7:30. Those of us who live close to the tracks actually heard—and some even felt—all of the commotion. We spoke with several people from the city, the police department, and the railroad crew, which was pretty cool to hear their perspective on everything. One neighbor actually witnessed the train derailment and saw the train cars come into his yard!

One of the railroad contractor guys we talked to said he was one of five who were supposed to be there to help clean it up. Two cranes were already on site and getting ready to work.

As of 10:30 a.m., parts of Mattie Avenue, Railroad Avenue, and Highway 41 were still closed off. All of these photos were taken from the Mattie Avenue side.
Fox 31 arrived while we were there, and WALB was on the way.</text>

It may be sad to see our current state of downtown Ashburn but we like to be optimistic and hope for positive change soon; a revitalization of Ashburn.

The old photo is a postcard scan from what the TCP *thinks* is the 1920s. It was taken from the top of the courthouse clock tower. In the photo you can see the old smoke stack that was once part of Bett’s Lumber Co.

The new photo was taken with a drone May 17, 2023 from right beside the courthouse clock tower to get a similar view.

photo 2: FROM DAVID BALDWIN: “THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN BY IRA TEAGUE (BORN MARCH 25, 1875; DIED MAY 17, 1944). HE IS BURIED AT ROSEHILL [CEMETERY] IN ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES ON THE RIGHT ON THE DRIVEWAY ENTRANCE FROM THE ASHBURN TOWN IN THE MCLENDON FAMILY PLOT. IRA WAS PARALYZED IN THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. THE REMARKABLE THING ABOUT THIS PICTURE, AND HE TOOK OTHERS, IS THAT HE COMPLETELY RECOVERED AND WAS ABLE TO CLIMB THE STEPS OF THE CLOCK TOWER AND TAKE THIS PICTURE. HOW DO I KNOW IRA TEAGUE TOOK THESE PICTURES? HE SIGNED ONE OF THEM IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER.”

                <text>From David Baldwin:
"The sign east of the silos reads Ashburn Peanut Company. It began in 1938 by a Mr. Ray from Thomasville, (no relationship to our Rays) who had experience in the peanut business in other towns; however, Jay Faircloth 's grandfather had come here in 1916 to manage JS Shingler's Ashburn Oil Mill, then he served as Vice President of the Ashburn Peanut Company in 1938. Peanuts were first introduced in south Georgia, Edison Ga. in 1908 or there abouts. JS Shingler started the Ashburn Oil Mill, between these peanut silos and Mr. Betts saw mill beside the railroad in 1910 with WA Shingler manager from 1910 to 1916. The Betts Saw Mill went broke around 1912. Mr. Betts died in 1918. The silos burned around 1972. David Moore, Jimmy Black, and Willie Turner were among the brave souls that tried to save it. I saw that at around 2pm in the afternoon in the Fall of 1972 or 1973. There is an old story that when the old black laborers there knew they were soon to die, they would go into the silos to the top and lay on the peanuts and leave for eternity there since they had given so much of their lives for the mill. The Sinclair station is there, built in 1935, after the Hotel Clyde was rolled back first. Shingler and Lawrence has been change to the Stein Theater on the corner. It appears West Washington Street is still dirt."

Best guess on age is the late 1950s based on the cars in the Ashburn Peanut Company lot.</text>
