"I love the work. when I was 13 years old I crawled up on a stool and learned to set type by hand and have been working ever since only to go to school and college. I was a read daddy girl and I did this just to help him. I came to Ashburn when I was four years old, nothing was here, only a wilderness. So I have watched the town grow and love it. It is marvelous how to town has grown the past few years with an active Chamber of Commerce made up of members who have given time and money to bring industry here. We beg of every citizen to lend their support to making Ashburn and Turner County grow."</text>

Location: Southeast corner of Turner County near the Tift County and Irwin County lines and adjacent to a branch which trails through the isolated area.

<text>Editorial by Wiregrass Farmer Editor Ben Baker advocating for the Turner County festival to be named the Fire Ant Festival.

"I like the idea for a number of reasons (not just because I came up with the name.) Think about the other festival around Georgia. Georgia has kudzu, mule, hogs and gnats for goodness sake with festivals in their name.

"We can have a mascot, an ant in a fire chief's hat and bunker gear standing with a hose ready to put out a fire. Or maybe an ant in camp fatigues and a flamethrower strapped to his back...

Fire ants are everywhere down here. Everybody has been bitten by a fire ant at least once. I can't think of a single redeeming feature for these insects.

Our festival would be an honoring tribute to the fire ant but a simple recognition for all this tiny creature has done since coming here from another continent..."

Mr. Leatherwood said he received a call from a man living in Quitman who said that city recently held its first-ever Wiregrass Festival. This could present a conflict.

The Turner County committee decided last week to incorporate under the name 'Wiregrass Festival' and thereby copyright that name for Turner County's event. Quitman then could not specifically use 'Wiregrass Festival' as its festival name, although a variation on that name is possible."

He created a thriving mechanic business in the sleepy town of Sycamore. He was a role model to young teens in the community, active in local politics, a leader in his church, and has even survived prostate and bladder cancer. He lived and breathed his work but even retirement doesn’t slow him down. Just ask the neighbor who saw him cutting down a tree in his front yard a few years back by himself. The Turner County Project got to sit on the Albritton side porch on January 15, 2022, with Jack, his wife Patsy, and his daughter Rene Fortson to discuss his life and his legacy.</text>

The Red Cross is swell so give them $5.00 for me. I will be able to write twice a month so you and Mary swap letters. Give my love to family and the rest for you and Mary. All my love.
