Title A name given to the resource Portrait of John West Evans Description An account of the resource JOHN WEST EVANS (September 27, 1844 – January 16, 1904) Born in Hancock County to Sterling G. and Mary West Evans, John and his wife Ella, followed his business partner/brother-in-law John Samuel “J.S.” Betts (July 29, 1848 – April 25, 1918) and moved to Turner County in 1888 before it was even known as Ashburn or Turner County. John soon established himself as one of Turner County’s most entrepreneurial and civically active citizens. He was a leader in establishing the town as we know it. John was a bookkeeper for the firm and a prominent partner in the J.S. Betts Company which brought a lot of interest to the area with their sawmill. He also had his hand in the Betts-Evans Trading Company and Evans Realty Co. When the first post office was opened in Ashburn, he served as the first postmaster. He was also the Sunday school superintendent of the Methodist Church. “He had the wisdom twenty-five years ago to see that there had come a golden age for the lumber business, and forsook a good position to try his hand in a field of larger opportunity. He built up a great enterprise and made much money, and in doing of this was a chief factor in the building up of one of the best towns of South Georgia, and enabling a large number of men to make an [sic] hundredfold more than he made for himself. Betts was one of Ashburn’s founding fathers, long-time Mayor of Ashburn, and owner of the Betts Lumber Company. It was said that his wife Elmira Josephine Bohannon Betts (May 2, 1858 – September 27, 1907) used to “signal” her sister Ella Bohannon Evans (December 27, 1852 – February 22, 1910) from the widow’s peak on the third story. (Unfortunately, the widow’s peak was damaged in a storm and never repaired). The Evans home was just a few blocks south and was also another three-story Victorian home. The two brothers-in-law were business partners at the lumber company. Title A name given to the resource County Jail Turner County - National Register of Historic Places #82002490 Description An account of the resource From Application: "The Turner County jail was built in 1906 as the newly formed (1905) county's first jail. County records show the first order of business was issuing $60,000 in bonds for a jail and courthouse. The jail was designed by Wagoner & Dobson of Montgomery, Alabama and cost $10,855. Mrs. Netta Shingler has described the last hanging in Turner Count in 1914 as a "once-in-a-lifetime" community event, with Sheriff King, Deputy Sheriff O.B. Jarman, C.H. Bishop, School Superintendent, and J.B. Thrasher, Methodist Minister present. A service was held, two hymns were sung by Mrs. Netta D. Jacobs [Shingler], the Public School Music Teacher, and Mrs. J.J. Story, a former teacher. ("If the prisoner heard us he made no sign but those conducting the service were overcome.") Ashburn, from its charter in 1896, had the nickname of "Holy City" because the merchants held prayer each morning before opening their shops. The Turner County jail has continuously served as a prison since 1907, although it may soon be closed if not significantly altered to meet state fire code and life safety requirements." The bottom floor was the home of the sheriff and the upper floor housed prisoners who committed the pettiest to the most violent of crimes. The jail closed down after 87 years of operation in 1993. Title A name given to the resource Wesleyan Methodist Campground and Tabernacle - National Registration of Historical Places Application + Photos - #98001485 Description An account of the resource Description from Application: The Wesleyan Methodist Campground and Tabernacle contains at it major feature a historic tabernacle structure along with other auxiliary buildings on an informally landscaped quarter block near downtown Ashburn, Georgia. The tabernacle is of post-and-beam construction with a large corrugated metal hipped roof and seating for approximately 400 people. There is a small, raised platform at the eastern end. The tabernacle is open on three sides, with he side behind the platform being the only enclosed side. The roof is supported by vertical posts with angled bracing, all out of pine, that rest on brick bases. Original moveable pews remain. [update 2022: the pews are no longer there]. The roof was replaced and updated in 1946-1947 and some of the posts repaired in 1951. The four existing auxiliary buildings that may up the rest of the campground include the historic frame kitchen and historic sleeping room, which contains a central hall and eight sleeping chambers with functional wooden shutters, both of which date to 1914, as well as two non-historic buildings, one of which is a restroom building. The site is park-like with grass and several large tree. The property adjoins a residential area and a commercial storage area, and is only a few blocks from Ashburn's central business district. Changes to the property include demolition of the non-historic "bunk house: and the addition of electricity in c. 1980. Title A name given to the resource Turner County Courthouse - National Registration of Historical Places Application + Photos - #80001247 Description An account of the resource Pages: 4 This red and buff colored courthouse has three entrances. Two are elaborate. They are projecting, Ionic tetrastyle. The cement columns are coupled on each side of a pedimented doorway. The columns are capped by a pediment filled with a design featuring a center cartouche and tendrils. The modillioned cornice and use of quoining on the facade give a bold, direct appearance. The rectangular windows on the first story have lintels in which the key stone and end voussoirs are emphasized. The rectangular second story windows have a flat arch lintel and elaborated sills in which the end stones are emphasized. Small rectangular windows are under the cornice. In the courtroom is a coved pressed metal ceiling which consists of recessed squares with leaf motifs in each corner. Ionic pilasters that echo the exterior columns alternate with the windows. The balcony remains open and has an ornate spindle railing with brackets beneath. It is held up by iron columns of the Corinthian order. The pew like spectator seats are hand grained (see photograph). This fine graining was done in the last eight years by a Mr. Beasley of Turner County, now deceased. According to F. H. Wordlaw, Jr., [Floyd H. Wardlow, Jr.] Turner County Attorney, a mixture of paint and beer was used to create the wood graining. The square bell tower, which rises majestically, is capped with an octagonally domed cupola. The Historical Society of Turner County has used this tower adaptively by exhibiting artifacts, memorabilia, and photographs as one climbs to the top fo the tower. One is literally "inside" the hooded clocks (E. Howard Clock works) which have been electrified. The domed cupola contains a bell with a yoke pulley and rope so it could be run independently for fires, riots, etc. SIGNIFICANCE: The plan of the courthouse is an eclectic one. A highly patterned, bold, red and buff colored structure, it is the most outstanding building in Ashburn, a most unlikely setting for an Italianate clock tower. It depicts the local flavor of politics in 1907 and reveals the taste of the leaders of the community that selected the plan. The hand grained spectator seats in the courtroom are the only ones founds in Georgia.
