Known as the Shingler House, this lovely home represents the Neoclassical Revival period. Constructed in 1908, the building features a multi-hipped, red tile roof, exposed rafters, and monumental portico. The porte cochere was enclosed in 1914 when a sun room was added.
Built for Clyde Shingler McKenzie by father J. S. Shingler for wedding present. It was the former home of Betty Shingler Talmadge, wife to Herman Talmadge (governor and former US Senator).

TURNER COUNTY
This County, created by Act of the Legislature August 18, 1905, is named for Capt. Henry Gray Turner who was captured by Union troops at Gettysburg. A resident of Nashville and later of Quitman, he served in the legislature, and in Congress from 1881 to 1897. About 1855 the Battle fo Sandy Sink was tough two miles easy of Cool Springs with the Indians under Billy Bow Legs. Among the first County Officers were: Sheriff John B. Cason, Ordinary W.A. Greer, Clerk of the Superior Court C.L. Royal, Tax Receiver V.A. Freeman, Tax Collector T.E. Brown and Treasurer J.H. Gorday.

250 prisoners, 65 U.S. personnel, and one medic. The camp was started in late 1943 and disbanded in 1946.
Most of the prisoners spoke German with a few who could speak English.
They built tables, mounted animals, painted, turpentined, stacked peanuts, and helped farmers.
"The farmers didn't pay the prisoners directly, but they normally gave them money for cigarettes and other things. The personnel in the camp woud give them cigarettes and ... money to buy a few luxuries."
"Located on a field about 500 feet square. It had four guard houses without windows. There were flood lights so that no one could escape. There were ten strings of barbed wire around it and in it."

These coins were used to pay employees who worked at the W.W. "Bill" Giddens’ sawmill in Coverdale. The employees could use the coins at the company-owned store. There was also an agreement with the Ashburn merchants that they would accept them as payment and Mr. Giddens would come around monthly to collect the coins and pay the merchants.
