<text>From Wayne Blue:
"The architect for this building as shown was P.E. Dennis of Macon. He was architect for many of the buildings and homes in Ashburn. This building was built in 1899 and was named Ashburn Graded School. The corner stone was moved to what is now the north wing of the building. It reads 1899 Ashburn Graded School Built by the citizens for the advancement of the interests of the Community. Building Committee J.S. Shingler, Chmn W.A.Murray, Secty, J.S. Betts , T.H. Thrasher, G.B. Gorday. I am not sure of exact date but was in early 30's that they had run out of room in the buildings as shown and the Ashburn city board of education decided to tear down the northern building with the bell tower on top and the connecting walk ways. The building torn down on the upstairs had an auditorium. Some people say that the building burned, but there are no records of this. The Wiregrass told the story of how the building was demolished. The new building when completed had as its base the building you see on the right side of screen. There was a north wing (high school) and a south wing (grammer school) added. Also on the rear was an auditorium which seated over 600 with a balcony. The balcony was later closed off for additional classrooms. Under the stage was the lunch room. There are plenty pictures of the school as built. The new building lasted until May 1954 when a fire destroyed the upstairs and the auditorium. The city board of education deeded the property to the county at this time. The county rebuilt the center section downstairs only, the two wings were not damaged. And that is what we now have as the Alternative School."</text>

The first building built by the church and remained the place of worship until 1903, when a new larger wooden building was built on McLendon St. The new building had two wings and 3 balconies. In 1956 this building was replaced by the current brick building which has one balcony and seated around 450.

The orginal building later became the Wesleyan Methodist Church. It was located at the corner of south Gordon St and east Madison Ave. This is where the storage buildings are now located.

The Baptist held their first meeting under the mill shed of the J.S. Betts Company in August 1889 in the town of Marion, which later became Ashburn. A tree had not been milled at this time. The property for the first building was donated by Mr and Mrs. W W Ashburn. The congregation meet in the school house until that first building was complete. The building was heated by a coal stove and lighted by oil lights. The first musical instrument was a pump organ.</text>

ashburn, people of turner county
1
Recently, the TCP received some photos of the return of the body of Roy Sumner Jr provided by Perry Funeral Chapel. After some further research into Roy, it was discovered that he died while serving in the military overseas in Egypt during World War II.

“Roy Marion, Junior, (service no. 34088691) was apparently born in Tift County, but his family later moved to Turner County. He enlisted 16 October 1941 at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta. On 20 Feb 1943, The ‘Tifton Gazette’ ran a notice that he had been killed in action and awarded the Purple Heart. Sgt. Sumner of the U S. Army was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sumner, formerly of Tifton and was well known here, according to the paper.”
