<text>From Meagan:
A train derailment occurred in Sycamore, GA, this morning around 7:30. Those of us who live close to the tracks actually heard—and some even felt—all of the commotion. We spoke with several people from the city, the police department, and the railroad crew, which was pretty cool to hear their perspective on everything. One neighbor actually witnessed the train derailment and saw the train cars come into his yard!

One of the railroad contractor guys we talked to said he was one of five who were supposed to be there to help clean it up. Two cranes were already on site and getting ready to work.

As of 10:30 a.m., parts of Mattie Avenue, Railroad Avenue, and Highway 41 were still closed off. All of these photos were taken from the Mattie Avenue side.
Fox 31 arrived while we were there, and WALB was on the way.</text>

This oral history captures the life story of artist Winfred Rembert, told in a 2003 phone interview with Shelley Zorn for the Turner County Jail Museum project in Ashburn, Georgia.

Rembert recalls his early life in rural Georgia, where he was raised in cotton fields with little access to education. As a teenager, he became involved in civil rights demonstrations. At age 18, after stealing a car during a protest in Americus, he was jailed in Cuthbert. Held in secrecy for two years while the Army listed him as AWOL, he endured harsh treatment, including severe beatings. After fighting back against a deputy, he escaped briefly but was captured.

He describes being taken by law enforcement and local citizens to a secluded site prepared with ropes for lynching. There, he was tortured—hung by his feet, cut, and nearly killed—before one man intervened, sparing his life. He was paraded publicly in chains, convicted in a biased trial, and sentenced to 27 years for larceny, escape, and related charges, though he served seven.

In prison, he was transferred from Reidsville to Leesburg and eventually to the Turner County Work Camp in Ashburn, where he found comparatively humane treatment. At Ashburn, he learned road construction, reading, and writing, and was eventually made a trustee. Most significantly, he met his future wife there, beginning a relationship that connected him permanently to Ashburn.

Throughout the interview, Rembert emphasizes survival, resilience, and the shaping of his later art, which drew directly from these lived experiences of labor, incarceration, racial violence, and community memory.

This red and buff colored courthouse has three entrances. Two are elaborate. They are projecting, Ionic tetrastyle. The cement columns are coupled on each side of a pedimented doorway. The columns are capped by a pediment filled with a design featuring a center cartouche and tendrils. The modillioned cornice and use of quoining on the facade give a bold, direct appearance. The rectangular windows on the first story have lintels in which the key stone and end voussoirs are emphasized. The rectangular second story windows have a flat arch lintel and elaborated sills in which the end stones are emphasized. Small rectangular windows are under the cornice.

In the courtroom is a coved pressed metal ceiling which consists of recessed squares with leaf motifs in each corner. Ionic pilasters that echo the exterior columns alternate with the windows. The balcony remains open and has an ornate spindle railing with brackets beneath. It is held up by iron columns of the Corinthian order.

The pew like spectator seats are hand grained (see photograph). This fine graining was done in the last eight years by a Mr. Beasley of Turner County, now deceased. According to F. H. Wordlaw, Jr., [Floyd H. Wardlow, Jr.] Turner County Attorney, a mixture of paint and beer
was used to create the wood graining.

The square bell tower, which rises majestically, is capped with an octagonally domed cupola. The Historical Society of Turner County has used this tower adaptively by exhibiting artifacts, memorabilia, and photographs as one climbs to the top fo the tower. One is literally "inside" the hooded clocks (E. Howard Clock works) which have been electrified. The domed cupola contains a bell with a yoke pulley and rope so it could be run independently for fires, riots, etc.

SIGNIFICANCE:
The plan of the courthouse is an eclectic one. A highly patterned, bold, red and buff colored structure, it is the most outstanding building in Ashburn, a most unlikely setting for an Italianate clock tower. It depicts the local flavor of politics in 1907 and reveals the taste of the leaders of the community that selected the plan.

The hand grained spectator seats in the courtroom are the only ones founds in Georgia.</text>
