A mob abducted and shot the men, binding them to trees. Royal, a farmer, had faced legal and community harassment. Jackson had been accused of assaulting a white woman but was bailed out by Royal. Subsequent warrants led to the arrest of five white men, but a preliminary hearing dismissed the charges due to insufficient evidence. Title A name given to the resource Two Negroes Hanged; Riddled with Bullets Description An account of the resource The Atlanta Semi-Weekly Journal reported on April 19, 1910, the lynching of Albert Royal and Charles Jackson near Ashburn. A mob abducted and shot the men, binding them to trees. Royal, a farmer, had faced legal and community harassment. Jackson had been accused of assaulting a white woman but was bailed out by Royal. Subsequent warrants led to the arrest of a number of white men living near Amboy. Warrants were sworn out by two negro women charging five prominent white men with lynching. The negroes killed were Albert Royal and Charley Jackson. The trouble started over an attack on a white woman. Jackson was arrested, and Royal signed his bond. The two negroes then began to boast of the crime, and were overheard by whites." Attempts to fund and create a private school, the Turner County Academy, as well as propose a "Freedom of Choice" plan by the Turner County Board of Education to the government were two actions. Title A name given to the resource Two queens become one Subject The topic of the resource In 2005, Turner County selected a single Homecoming Queen for the first time in three decades, ending a “tradition” that had been in place since 1975. According to The Wiregrass Farmer, the two-queen system began when minority students approached school administrators requesting the change; at that time, the Homecoming ballot itself was still segregated. While the ballot was later integrated, the exact year of that change remains unknown. Originally, six students were listed on the ballot and the top two vote-getters were crowned queens. By the early 2000s, those two students were often of different races. The U.S. Justice Department ultimately determined that race appeared to be a deciding factor and instructed, through the school system’s attorney, that selecting two queens on the basis of race must stop immediately. Although officials maintained the process simply recognized the two highest vote-getters, students were notified prior to the 2005 vote that only one queen would be chosen.
