Title A name given to the resource Train Derailment in Sycamore, GA Description An account of the resource From Meagan: A train derailment occurred in Sycamore, GA, this morning around 7:30. Those of us who live close to the tracks actually heard—and some even felt—all of the commotion. We spoke with several people from the city, the police department, and the railroad crew, which was pretty cool to hear their perspective on everything. One neighbor actually witnessed the train derailment and saw the train cars come into his yard! One of the railroad contractor guys we talked to said he was one of five who were supposed to be there to help clean it up. Two cranes were already on site and getting ready to work. As of 10:30 a.m., parts of Mattie Avenue, Railroad Avenue, and Highway 41 were still closed off. All of these photos were taken from the Mattie Avenue side. Fox 31 arrived while we were there, and WALB was on the way. What started as a simple reason to gather has quietly ebbed and flowed into a tradition for many. Ten years in, it’s not an event you RSVP to; it’s just family, neighbors, lunch tables, and a fire that burns for hours without complaint. In most homes, the holiday weekend winds down in stretchy pants and leftovers eaten straight from the fridge. Pa’s Syrup Shack is where leftovers become part of a bigger equation. Long tables and camp chairs pop up outdoors, and a potluck lunch unfolds like it always has: dense with home cooking, short on ceremony, and heavy on comfort. The potluck spread features fresh smoked chicken quarters and a lineup of sides that range from classic dressing, potato salad, mac and cheese, to corn soufflé. The dessert table held its own spotlight, loaded down with fresh pecan pies, banana pudding, and pound cake sliced thick and unapologetic, to name a few. This wasn’t light eating. This was legacy food, the kind built for community, not restraint. But the real work, the heart of the day, simmers nearby in the syrup kettle. Cane syrup commands patience. Four, sometimes five hours of steady heat, gas fed into flame, and long stretches of easy conversation. The process hasn’t changed in a decade. The pace is non-negotiable. The reward is predictable: something rich, something pure, and something worth waiting on. This year’s yield was 87 bottles. Eighty-seven bottles of liquid gold, amber and thick, poured hot and sealed fast. It’s the kind of syrup that makes you rethink every bottle you ever bought in a store. Not because it’s rare, but because it’s real and tastes like a Turner County memory. And that’s the point of ten years of doing it. The repetition is the relevance. Traditions don’t become traditions in the excitement. They become traditions in return. In showing up, stirring the pan, passing the plates, bottling the batch, and promising, without ever needing to say it, that we’ll do it again next year. Title A name given to the resource Old Hopewell Primitive Baptist Spring Description An account of the resource In his interview with the Turner County Project, 94-year-old Donzelle Collins recalled his earliest memories of the spring near Old Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church. He was about six or seven when he and the other children, who grew up attending church there, would quietly slip out during services to visit the spring. The church’s seating was divided—men on one side, women on the other, and children in the middle—and no one dared to move or speak. Still, the temptation to sneak away was strong. The children would run down to the spring, lie on the ground, and drink straight from the bubbling water. There was no cup or container, just the earth and the clear water rising naturally from below. The spring fascinated them; as Donzelle remembered, it was rare and magical to see water bubbling up from the ground like that.
