Title A name given to the resource McKenzie Building Description An account of the resource Location: 105 E College Ave. in Ashburn, GA National Register of Historic Places #: 92001042, Ashburn Commercial Historic District James Simon Shingler (August 25, 1859 – September 30, 1943) constructed what is known as the McKenzie building located in downtown Ashburn, Georgia in 1906. This 8000 sq feet (per floor), two-story structure was built to be used as an office complex. When it was first built, it was originally called the Shingler building but gradually became known to everyone by the current name after Gordon Columbus McKenzie (February 10, 1885 – 2/25/1958). He had offices upstairs where he made farm operations and long-term land loans for at least a decade, possibly longer. In fact, you can still see his name painted on several office doors upstairs (pictured below). Despite the name change, it was still a family affair because J.S. Title A name given to the resource Old Turner County Jail, interior Description An account of the resource The Turner County Jail was built in 1906 as the newly formed Turner County’s first official jail. County records show that the first order of business was issuing $60,000 in bonds for a jail and courthouse. The jail was designed in the Romanesque style by Wagoner and Dobson of Montgomery, Alabama and cost $10,855. An interior view of the old Turner County jail. The bottom floor was the home of the sheriff and the upper floor housed prisoners who committed the pettiest to the most violent of crimes. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The jail closed down after 87 years of operation in 1993. Location: 241 E. College Avenue in Ashburn, GA.
