Title

Victoria Evans Memorial Library (before 1987)

Description

This one-story, wood-framed building was constructed in 1932 by the City of Ashburn with the help of a public works program. The original purpose was to become a community and library space. However, a new library was built on donated Shingler land near James Avenue in 1987. Victoria Evans, daughter of John West and Ella Evans was the town’s first librarian and worked there for 20 years until she retired. The new location now pays tribute to her service and is known as Victorian Evans Memorial Library. And as for this building, it has become the Turner County Chamber of Commerce and welcomes visitors and new citizens to Ashburn. Local groups host meetings in the backroom where patrons used to watch reel-to-reel movies.

Date
