"In a shooting affray following the horsewhipping of C.R. Christmas because of his infatuation for a mulatto girl, John Christmas was killed and his brother, James Christmas, and J.D. Ward were probably fatally wounded. Several others whose names have not been learned are reported to have received slight wounds.
The fight occurred at Kings Mill, a lumber town near here, and the combatants were the Christmas boy, aided by their friends, and the employes [sic] of the lumber plant."
