Location: Johnston Road, Ashburn, Georgia
Date: March 13, 2021
Johnston Road was named after John Allen (Pop) Johnston (May 26, 1912 – April 13, 2003). “Pop” was once a man known throughout the county because of working with Irwin Co EMC. One of his main jobs was riding the roads of Turner County checking on electrical lines belonging to the EMC. If anyone’s electricity went out because of bad weather, he was the one called to check on repairing the lines wherever it may have been. He was always on call for any reason needed for the lights to stay on. His wife, Ivilyn Baker Johnston (November 29, 1918 – February 2, 2011) would act as an answering service for him. Sometimes he would even be asked to do collections for people whose bills were late or just weren’t paid for some reason. A task he did not enjoy! He and his wife Ivilyn were the parents of 5 children, Lalaouise J. Hudgins, Larry Johnston, Jerry Johnston, Mike Johnston, and Jill J. Dyal.
When E911 came to Turner County, the family asked that Johnston Road be named after him.
Today, he still has a son and a grandson that live on Johnston Road.
